【紐西蘭鷹視野中文網】港府周五（8月30日）大肆抓捕社運人士與本土派議員，美國參議院兩黨領袖、議員紛紛發聲譴責北京，支持香港「反送中」抗議民眾。少數黨領袖舒默直接向中國國家主席習近平發出信號，表示全世界都在看香港，也會讓北京對其在香港的行為負責。
據中央社報導，香港警方在當地時間8月30日24小時內突然拘捕包括香港民族黨前召集人陳浩天、立法會議員鄭松泰、民主派沙田區議員許銳宇、前香港大學學生會會長孫曉嵐、香港眾志秘書長黃之鋒以及成員周庭等至少10名支持「反送中」的社會運動人士和立法會議員，引發國際關注。
美國參議院少數黨領袖舒默（Chuck Schumer）周四（8月29日）就發推警告北京：「如果安全部隊鎮壓香港抗議者，中國共產黨必須後果自負。」周五，他再次連發數條推文，譴責港府當天的逮捕行動。
舒默在推文中寫道：「中國（中共）加強對香港的控制，以扼殺民主，這是一個殘酷的獨裁政權的絕望行為。幾個月來，香港人走上街頭，挺身捍衛他們的民主權利。美國人民必須繼續和香港人民並肩站在一起。」

據美國之音報導，共和党參議員魯比奧（Marco Rubio）今年6月提出的《香港人權與民主法案》要求美國國務院每年對香港的自治狀態進行認證，從而決定是否維持香港目前所享有的特殊地位和待遇，並將制裁侵權官員。與此同時，法案還要求美國總統查明那些對綁架香港書商和記者負有責任的人以及其他有關捲入壓制香港基本自由的人，凍結這些這些人的資產並禁止他們入境美國。」
各界認為，《香港人權與民主法案》將是1992年通過的《美國-香港政策法》的加強升級版，將會比後者對香港的自主狀態進行更嚴厲的考核。
眾議院議長佩洛西（Nancy Pelosi）之前已宣布支持這項法案。
參議院多數黨領袖麥康奈爾（Mitch McConnell）周五同樣發推文說：「全球領導人應該關注香港正在進行的鎮壓和最近逮捕民主活動人士的（事件）。在北京尊重香港自治和政治自由之前，（國際社會）不應該像往常一樣和香港打交道。」
